Admission to a PhD programme is highly competitive. In some cases, a student needs to have completed a Master’s Degree in order to be considered for admissions. In other cases, an undergraduate degree is sufficient.
In the UK, obtaining a PhD is quicker than in the U.S. A Doctor of Philosophy obtained in the UK is considered equivalent to a U.S. PhD, depending on the area of study and program of the university attended. While a PhD is the highest academic degree a student can obtain in the U.S., it is not so in the UK.
In Canada, PhD candidates have completed a Master’s Degree in a related field. In some cases, a student may go directly from an Honours Bachelor’s Degree to a PhD program. In other cases, a student can fast-track to a doctoral program after one year in a Master's program (without having to complete the Master's). The equivalence to a U.S. PhD is dependent on the university and area of study.
In India, the PhD programme involves three years of study beyond the M.Phil, a one and a half year program for students who have completed their second stage postgraduate degree. Equivalence to a U.S. PhD must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis because U.S. higher education system does not easily recognize PhD earned abroad. In some cases, a post doctoral experience helps in fulfilling U.S. requirements.
